Anthropic has signed a lease with EverWind for data center capacity at Point Tupper, Nova Scotia, its first data center agreement in Canada, Reuters reported on Oct. 16. According to CBC News, EverWind will build and own the facility, and Anthropic will lease the first phase for a term of at least 20 years. Anthropic said the site “will power Claude models and serve growing demand from Canadian and global customers.”

EverWind announced more than C$10 billion in planned private investment: over C$8 billion for the data center campus and C$2 billion for onshore wind projects. EverWind calls it the largest privately funded investment in the province’s history; that is the company’s claim. The campus is planned to start with a 95-megawatt phase in late 2027, followed by a 325-megawatt expansion targeted for 2028, for 420 megawatts in total, subject to commercial, technical and regulatory conditions. For scale, CBC notes Nova Scotia’s entire generating capacity is close to 3,000 megawatts.

SaltWire reports preliminary construction has begun on the 200,000-square-foot first-phase building, and that the campus would be supplied by 650 megawatts of wind power from 80 turbines, 51% owned by a Mi’kmaq consortium led by Membertou First Nation. Per The Logic, Anthropic pledged to pay for the grid upgrades needed to connect the site, shield existing electricity customers from related price increases, and contribute “tens of millions of dollars” to community priorities. Those are company commitments, not yet independently verifiable.

What this means for you: Nothing changes for Claude users today. The bigger signal is that AI labs are now going wherever they can find clean power and room to grow, and they are making ratepayer promises up front to win local approval.
