Physical Intelligence Opens Pi API Beta for Robot Foundation Models

Physical Intelligence launched a waitlisted API beta that lets outside teams upload robot data, fine-tune its π-series models on Pi-managed compute and run them through a hosted inference gateway.

Physical Intelligence announced a Pi API beta on Oct. 13, 2026. Teams can upload robot data, launch fine-tuning on compute Pi manages, and run the resulting model through a hosted inference gateway, then iterate with evaluation data.

The company pitches its π0 and π0.5 models as a shared base of physical knowledge that cuts the data needed to adapt to new tasks, environments or robots. That is company positioning. Open versions of these models are in Pi’s openpi repository, but fine-tuning them locally needs serious GPUs; the API is the managed alternative.

Partner demos (company-selected): Pi showcases Actor, whose autonomous wheel loader loads a dump truck, and Almond, which says its dual-arm Axol robot deburred parts after four days of iterating with the API. These are examples Pi chose, not independent tests.

What’s missing: Access is by waitlist; applicants describe their robot, task, data and intended use. The launch post doesn’t publish pricing or service-level terms.

What this means for you: If you already have demos and a clear task, the waitlist is the next step. Measure on your own hardware before trusting partner speed claims.
