The Simons Foundation announced on Oct. 15, 2026 that it, Anthropic and OpenAI will commit $15 million in combined funding and resources. The foundation will manage and award the money, including through an open call for proposals, for workshops and initiatives that help researchers evaluate recent AI-assisted results, learn new tools, share perspectives and shape collective standards for AI use.
In an Oct. 15 update, OpenAI said it is contributing $5 million and will give Simons-supported researchers access to its models and computing resources. The foundation’s release does not state Anthropic’s share. It says both companies will provide AI tools and compute to researchers it supports, extending beyond math to basic science.
“The community should be driving discussions of how these tools are evaluated, adopted and used, not any single company or institution,” foundation president David Spergel said. The foundation notes it funded development of the Lean proof assistant, which is used to check AI-assisted proofs.
What this means for you: This is funding and community infrastructure, not a new result. If you work in math or formal verification, watch for the open call.
